2179 is open to young men who are between 14 and 21 years old. If you
are interested, but you are not quite 14, you are welcome to come on
one of our activities as a guest to check us out. Then when you turn 14
you can join. We are a part of the Boy Scouts of America, and most of
our members have been a Boy Scout when they were younger. The majority
of the crew members are Eagle Scouts, and the rest are working on
getting to be Eagles. Most of us are also members of the Order of the
Arrow.
You
should know that Venturer crews are permitted by the BSA to create
their own by laws -- the rules that run the crew. Our crew held a
meeting and wrote up some by laws that we wanted. There was an
important decision for us to make when we began: should we allow girls
in our crew?
The
BSA allows girls to be in Venturer crews, but leaves it up to each crew
to decide. The guys in our crew decided that they want to participate
in outdoor activities that involve a lot of camping. We have nothing
against girls, but we like to get out with just the guys and have the
freedom to do what we want. We want to date and have fun on activities
with our girl friends, but we also like to go on high adventure stuff
with just a group of guys. The girls will be there waiting for us when
we get home.
Another
big question we get asked a lot (since we live in Utah) is if the crew
is just for Mormons. Nope, it's for guys from any church. We have lots
of Mormons in our crew (simply because there are lots of Mormons where
we live), but we also have guys with other faiths. We are open to
anyone who likes what we do and is willing to live by the Scout Oath
and Law.
